Papuan Voices II Launch Report

After over a year of hard work, the first public viewing of the eight short films of Papuan Voices took place at Bentara Budaya in Yogyakarta with a very special guest in attendance: Dr Mia from the film ‘Mutiara Dalam Noken’ (Pearl in the Noken).

RightsCon: Apply to join the Responsible Data Forum

Technological tools and innovations have dramatically altered the landscape of human rights documentation. But the use of these tools and strategies also introduces new risks and challenges, which are little understood in practice or in theory. This Responsible Data Forum will address such issues in this hands on, collaborative event, structured towards concrete and practical responses to responsible data challenges. Participants will leave the forum with a stronger understanding of the responsible data issues at play when documenting human rights enjoyment, protection and violations.

Papuan Voices II Filmmakers: Agus Kalalu

Agustinus Kalalu or Agus is a talented videographer who is currently actively involved in Papuan Voices in Sorong, Papua Barat. Together with his colleagues, he is also working closely with the indigenous communities’ struggle to stop the destruction brought by palm oil companies in Papua Barat.

Crossroads Community Screenings Kick Off in Malaysia

Following the recent screenings that have been organised for Crossroads, our advocacy video project on migrants, this January saw the first community screening amongst Indonesian migrant workers living in a village in Sungei Pinang, Klang, Malaysia.

Papuan Voices II: Mama Mariode

RightsCon Update: Program Highlights

We are very excited to be partnering with Access and local hosts Foundation for Media Alternatives to organise the RightsCon summit in Manila this year. The RightsCon agendas are built by the community, and our all-star programming committee members are currently reviewing the 250+ proposals we’ve received from over 40 nations.

Internet Access and Censorship Are the Biggest Challenges in Southeast Asia: Mong Palatino, Global Voices

Mong Palatino, one of the advisors for RightsCon 2015, is the Philippines’ first blogger-turned-legislator and the youngest elected representative in the legislative body. He is currently the regional editor for Southeast Asia at Global Voices Online. RightsCon is the premier summit series bringing together civil society, engineers, activists, lawyers, companies, and governments on the subject of the Internet and human rights. RightsCon happens for the first time in Southeast Asia in Manila, The Philippines, from March 24-25, 2015.

My Week at the Gender and Technology Pop-up Institute

In early October, the Tactical Technology Collective announced its Gender and Technology Pop-up Institute and invited women and transgender activists to apply. More than 350 applications were received from all over the world. By end of the same month, it was announced that around 60 people were selected to be participants, and I was one of the lucky bunch!
