Following the recent screenings that have been organised for Crossroads, our advocacy video project on migrants, this January saw the first community screening amongst Indonesian migrant workers living in a village in Sungei Pinang, Klang, Malaysia.

“Kita harus berpikir ke depan untuk kamu dan anak cucu kamu. Besok cari makan dimana? Berkebun dimana? Mencari kayu untuk bangun rumah dimana? Sebagai orang tua, kami berpikir untuk masa depanmu. Itu sebabnya, mama dan bapak melindungi hutan kita yang tersisa ini.”

We are very excited to be partnering with Access and local hosts Foundation for Media Alternatives to organise the RightsCon summit in Manila this year. The RightsCon agendas are built by the community, and our all-star programming committee members are currently reviewing the 250+ proposals we’ve received from over 40 nations.

We’re gearing up for the launch of the second edition of Papuan Voices in 2015. We’ve just finished post-production on it and we can’t wait to share it with you!

Mong Palatino, one of the advisors for RightsCon 2015, is the Philippines’ first blogger-turned-legislator and the youngest elected representative in the legislative body. He is currently the regional editor for Southeast Asia at Global Voices Online. RightsCon is the premier summit series bringing together civil society, engineers, activists, lawyers, companies, and governments on the subject of the Internet and human rights. RightsCon happens for the first time in Southeast Asia in Manila, The Philippines, from March 24-25, 2015.

In commemoration of International Migrants Day that falls on December 18 every year, EngageMedia collaborated with One Billion Rising (OBR) Indonesia to screen films on the issues faced by women migrant workers on December 20, 2014.

In early October, the Tactical Technology Collective announced its Gender and Technology Pop-up Institute and invited women and transgender activists to apply. More than 350 applications were received from all over the world. By end of the same month, it was announced that around 60 people were selected to be participants, and I was one of the lucky bunch!

Crossroads, our collection of advocacy videos on migrant workers, refugees, and stateless people in Malaysia, was screened to 100 first-year Law students at Universiti Malaya, Kuala Lumpur.
